2022.01.20 08:41 reusable_throwaway33 Any benefits or risks of sleeping in a cold room?
So for more than a year I have been doing cold showers after a normal one. Also I realized that I can endure colder temperatures a lot more easily to the point where I feel hot at 5°C after like 15 minutes of just moving around or fast walking. It become normal to me to just walk around inside and outside in shorts.
So my bedroom window is open almost all the time (I close it when there's a heavy wind) which makes my room temperature similar to the outsides. This winter in my country wasn't extreme but the temperature overnight is steadily around 0°C and so at nights and mornings I can see my own breath clearly in the room(I haven't measured temp inside so this is the only indicator of coldness). So should I keep doing this since it doesn't affect me really in any way? I even sleep in just boxers, obviously covered but still.

2022.01.20 08:41 xland44 Drowned Folk aren't bound to sea creatures, but to...
Drowned Folk aren't bound to sea creatures, but to Dead Gods, A'ctelios Salash style.
First, let's differentiate between the six Dead Gods and the rest:
Creation of new Gods
Creating a God is relatively easy: Pawn explicitly created a God in just a single day, without any class: (Ch. 2.31).
It was just for a second. It was only a hope, the small desire of one who had never known he wanted it. But for one moment, Pawn wished it were all true. And in that moment, he believed. Having said that, if it's so simple to create a new God - just needing true, unadulterated belief - you'd expect there to have been countless Gods back when people still believed in them! Why have we seen only six?
And as he looked up, the Antinium heard the whisper. It came out of his heart, and then Pawn heard the voice in his mind.
[Acolyte Class Obtained!]
[Acolyte Level 1!]
[Skill – Prayer Obtained!]
Pawn believed, and he hoped, and that was enough. It was enough to dream of salvation.
And then there were Gods. Or at least, one.
The Dead Gods are shadows
The answer is that the six we've seen are the most powerful of the Dead Gods, but there are countless of them. They're what a world-class Named Adventurer is compared to a six-year old who just picked up a wooden sword. The Dead Gods are dead, and severely injured: these six are simply the ones who have managed to recover enough to be more than mere shadows.
Yes, shadows! Let's look at descriptions of the weaker Dead Gods from the world of the dead: (Ch. 8.11 E)
Except there were shadows. Shadows, without light. They seemed to gather and disperse at the edges of her ‘sight’. and about Kasinga, the Dead God who rules over the Land of the Dead: (Ch. 8.11 E)
“Yes, there are more like that one. Weaker, though. They won’t intrude so long as he guards us. Come on.”
“Ask your pursuer. She has too much power, here. The guardian chased her off, but she will return. Yet she was not here in such strength even when I died. And before that? They were just shadows like those.” Also, regarding there being 'countless' dead gods:
She pointed into the distance. Erin looked over her shoulder.
“Six of them. They gained strength recently.
(...)“Each one is far greater than the lesser shadows. They have actual bodies. Names."
(...) Then the six walked on Chandrar with a second sea of shadows. Do note the wording 'sea', that's conveniently relevant, but more on that later.
(...) They looked up—and the light burned away the sea of shadows.
Mortals who aren't weak can fight off the shadows
Secondly, you don't need to be a dragon to fight off the weaker dead gods: mortals who aren't weak (e.g Califor) are more than enough to fight them off: (Ch. 8.11 E)
(...) There have always been shadows. They devour the weak. Until recently, they could only do that. Even Califor and I—and Zel—could have held them off. Fought them, even.” The Dead Gods "consume" people:
“Not dead. Worse. Consumed. There is nothing left of them, as there would be nothing of you. Now, let's go back to all of the Six: each and every one of them has tried to "offer" things to the earthers they've spoken to, with a symbolic handshake to bind it. The earther is free to refuse - though as seen with Laken, if they reach out and shake hands it's binding regardless of extenuating circumstances ("I didn't mean to strike a deal, I'm blind and was reaching out to avoid falling!"). This petty maneuvering of Tamaroth's means that free choice, an offer, and the mortal having the ultimate ability to refuse, is a key element to it.
(...)They speak, they can barely be stopped. Yderigrisel can stop two at once; they tried to consume all the souls here.
Consumed to nothingness.”
So, to summarize:
-The weaker Dead Gods are shadows
-The weaker Dead Gods can be fought off by just a relatively strong mortal, not necessarily by beings of legend.
-Dead Gods "consume" people (remember this wording)
-A group of countless Dead Gods is like a "sea" of Dead Gods (remember this wording)
-Dead Gods must make an 'offer' in order to bind a mortal to them, and the mortal must accept in order for it to work.
-Dead Gods are in the Land of the Dead
On the Summer Solstice, Luan Khumalo met a stranger. He was offered a choice. A petulant Dead God has an offer refused. Frustrated, he sinks Luan into the depths. In the depths, "shadows" try to get into Luan but fail. Frustrated, they sink him further into the depths.
A petulant ___, enacting vengeance. Luan struggled, but he was sinking deeper. And he was not alone.
Shadows circled him. They swam around his mouth, his nose, wriggling. Trying to get in. Speaking in tongues he could not hear. Frustrated, they dragged him further down.
>(...) Death would be a kinder thing than being lost, consumed by the half-things, little reflections of what the man had been. They were the same. But where the stranger had been…intact…they were only fragments.
Explicit confirmation in the text that "the man" (the Dead God who had his offer refused) and "the half things" (the shadows trying to get in) are the same, except that the shadows are fragments or "half-things". Also, pay attention in the previous quote to the fact that the shadows are speaking in "tongues he could not hear" - that is, other languages. The only language spoken in Innworld is English, barring Drathian and Goblin, both which seem to have a funkiness we've yet to explore in the series (ties to earth, and goblin memories respectively). A bit odd that these shadows are speaking in tongues, plural!
They terrified him, even so. So he did not breathe. The shadows are trying to "wriggle in", and by breathing he would let them enter - kind of similar to Laken's handshake in that sense, in that the extenuating circumstances of drowning to death are irrelevant to the symbolic act of acceptance ("breathing them into his body").
At some point, Laken left mundane water and instead entered the Land of the Dead:
And then he realized he did not need to breathe. Because there was not only a lack of air here, there was a lack of need for it. Whatever surrounded him was made of the same thing as the Summer Solstice. The Shadows make offers, the Shadows are the creatures of the Sea:
A time out of time.
The further down he went, the stronger they became.
There was no point to his strength. The body he had built out of hard work, his knowledge, acquired over countless years of practice, his ambitions, levels, Skills, all of it…was worthless.
He was vanishing down here. They all were. Luan realized it. That was why they wanted him. This was oblivion for everything.
(...) How long he had drifted in oblivion, he did not know. But as he began to struggle, this otherness began to recede.
Cold liquid surrounded him. Suddenly, he did need to breathe. He felt water, pressing in, terrifying in the actual darkness, but reassuring because it was real.
Something—whispered to him. Shadows tried to obscure the light. *Give it all to us. Abandon this vessel. Now, remember how we said that the Dead Gods must offer a 'choice' before binding someone to them (like Laken to Tamaroth or Aaron to Emerhain)?
And then he heard a real voice in the darkness. Louder than the whispers. Louder than his fading thoughts. It whispered to him.
“You are dying.”
“You are dying.”
This was so. The man couldn’t respond even if he wanted to. But suddenly—he inhaled. And thought resumed.
Yet his lungs were still filled with water. He flailed, but something…soothed him. The voice, not quite words, continued. And he realized it was a single message.
“You are dying. Accept salvation from the sea.”
He realized something was on his face. Circling his throat. Piercing his skin—but the pain was a lesser thing.
“Join us. Breathe the depths.”
He knew what this was. The last gift to the drowning [Sailor]. The choice presented to the lucky at sea, or made voluntarily. Notice the ellipses surrounding the word 'creature'. Because it's not really a creature, innit? It's a Dead God.
The Gift of the Drowned Folk.
Something was on his face, his throat, acting as gills. Some…creature…was trying to meld with him. Turning him into one of the Drowned Folk.
And, this following passage is key:
Something was on his face, his throat, acting as gills. Some…creature…was trying to meld with him. Turning him into one of the Drowned Folk. It seems the "creatures" the Drowned Folk bind themselves to, that is, the weaker Dead Gods, have found a new technique to stay on the fringes of life: they help someone sink to death, and then at the last minute offer them assistance - one that would bind them to them and merge them, and in doing so give the Dead Gods a body and a name.
Half man, half sea creature.
Luan looked up towards the light. So far away. He began moving his arms and legs again as sense returned to his oxygen-deprived mind. He swam upwards—but the voice grew insistent.
Don’t move. He was causing the other distress and they had to be one thing.
Luan kept moving, ignoring the instinct to remain still. He felt pain. A shock as something suffered.
If the connection failed, both would die. Luan would drown, certainly. Yet—the man kept moving. He felt the water in his lungs turning to death again. What was he doing?
Didn’t he want to live?
“Stay. Live. Breathe the depths.” Again, these Dead Gods sure are vengful.
I want to. I want to live. But if I do—he will never know my face. Will he even recognize me?
And the voice had no answer to that. So Luan swam. Ignoring the pain. It was just pain. The voice was begging, pleading, now.
No. I want to be me.
Rage, then. Suddenly, the thing disconnected from his throat. He caught the last thought as he began to choke again.
Shadows clutched at him. They whispered in his ears, half-remembered words. Broken pleas. "I was your God. Worship me. Remember me, please..."
“I was your g…”
They would rather he drown than go without him. And they had a pull. Y'know who else had a pull? Tamaroth, to Laken, after they shook hands.
“…regret…my blessing…” "You'll regret refusing my blessing", perhaps.
He had refused the gifts of the Drowned.
Drowned Folk 'coincidentally' appear in this chapter, and it's not too reassuring.
They were in the middle of the sea, with nothing around them but the waves when the first hands reached up and tried to drag them into the water. The green-blue waters turning to abyssal colors parted as something emerged from the fathomless deep. A bit like A'ctelios Salash, where they're thinking freely until they're not.
Erin screamed, and ghosts were dragged under. Not to suffocate, struggling with whatever held them. What was it?
Drowned Folk. They clutched at Califor’s dress, at Erin’s leg. One grabbed Abel.
“What are you doing?”
“He walks the depths. The wise one. The one with knowledge. He wants you. We live if he takes you. Stay. We want to live even here.”
They pleaded with her. Drowned Women, dead [Sailors], people…Califor shouted as the three advanced, consuming the fleeing ghosts now struggling against their kind.
“Traitors! They will consume us all in time!”
The Drowned Folk would not let go. Laughter came from the depths.
The Drowned and the Dead Gods are one and the same. In order to survive, the Dead Gods bind themselves to mortals, in doing so giving them more life, but at the cost of being more mortal (they were present as ghosts in the afterlife, rather than shadows). As a result of merging, the Drowned Folk are more susceptible to their Dead God's control, much like the people of A'ctelios Salash.
Also, no textual basis for this next bit, but I think the Drowned Ones are the Enemy, and before the grand finale of the series, we'll be seeing a full-scale war against them, as they'll be on the side of the Dead Gods.
